COP22: Marked By Indecision and Uncertainty, Alarm that Nations May Disengage Because of Trump
État d’urgence climatique,
Statement by Attac-FranceThe Marrakech climate conference (COP22) can be characterised by two events: the celebration of the Paris Accord’s rapid ratification, and the election of an American president who has made global warming denial a central part of his campaign and platform. What should have been a space for action and the enactment of the Paris Accord, was instead a place where nations, especially wealthy ones, came (almost) empty-handed, making this COP one of indecision and uncertainty, with serious concerns still threatening the future, the continuation of international climate negotiations, and the possibility of containing global warming to less than 2°C or ideally under 1.5°C. As nations disengage and leave the markets and private sector to take the lead, as uttered in the halls of the COP22, we call for the opposite, an urgent and necessary political renewal.
